Interlaken Switzerland

Did we mention that Switzerland is gorgeous? The train rides alone are breath taking. We left Geneva with several bars of chocolate and took the train to Interlaken which turned out to be a very cute town nestled in the Swiss Alps. It is bordered by mountains on two sides and by lakes on the other two. The color of the water in the lakes is unlike anything we've ever seen. It is a clear, aqua, turquoise color.... sort of unexplainable. We tried to take tons of pictures to capture the color, but it just doesn't translate. All we know is that this must be the color of unpolluted water that flows directly from the snow covered mountain tops above.

Interlaken is well known for its adventure sporting activities. We decided upon canyoning which was FANTASTIC. Basically, we went with a group high into the Alps to a place called Grimsel Canyon. We were suited up with wet suits, shoes, life jackets and helmets. All the helmets had different names written on them. I was "Sexy" and Mike was "Sky God." The day was so much fun. First, we rappelled down a 300 foot drop into the canyon. We did a series of jumps off of the rocks into the pools of water below. On one of the drops you had to climb up a rope to an even higher ledge about 35 feet above the pool below. It was pretty intimidating. I somehow managed to do a few flips off the rocks into the water. I owe these special diving skills to my Dad. The were some slick rocks that we slid down into the water. Finally, there was a zip line that they loosely knotted us in and at the last minute we let go and dropped into the water. All in all, a great adventure.

Unfortunately, the rest of our stay in Interlaken was pretty rainy. We are hoping that there is some superstition that claims that a rainy honeymoon leads to a successful marriage. We had a lot of fun anyway playing cards and drinking wine. We even got in a couple hours of hiking during a brief respite from the rain.

Today we traveled to Lucerne where Michael found a beautiful chalet for us to stay in. We managed to get an upgrade to the honeymoon suite, so we've been enjoying the amenities that most of our previous hotels lacked. For example, a jacuzzi, a sauna, a fireplace, and cozy bathrobes. Tonight we might even attempt to figure out how to use the bidet.

Tomorrow we leave for Florence where we are hoping the weather will improve.

Hi Mike and Vanessa: It's A. Linda and U. Murray. In 1971, we also travelled to Interlaken. From your description, it sounds entirely different. We took a cog railroad train to the top of the Jungfrau Mountain. It was quite an experience. You have already been to Florence (my favorite city in Italy) and it sounds like you are having a fabulous time. By the way, we got your blog from your grandparents. Love to both of you.
